About this Card

From Something New to Something Old

This card came out of a silly idea–Why don’t we just send QR codes?

There was something to the weird “newness” of the QR code that made us want to juxtapose it with something old — the two of us at a wedding, looking smart in fancy-dress clothes.

But, what is old and what is new on this code? The code on the back or the digital picture of us taken mere months ago? What is “old” is actually a set of organized tropes (tuxedo, fascinator, sepia) that is designed to be old. And what is “new” is actually on the verge of obsolescence.

Technology and Obsolescence

We are celebrate one of our most sacred traditions by giving each other something new–often the newest technology. The new technology that we give each other this year is designed to be obsolete–ideally by the next gift giving season. There’s something unsatisfying about that. While some of the gifts I remember well are technology that I received (a first computer! an upgraded sound board!), it is sad that none of those items are still with me.

Part of this card is designed to reflect that idea — the “new” thing is a QR Code, a technology pronounced “dead” in 2013. But, that might have had more to do with usage. (There were QR codes in the NYC subway before there was internet access there.) Hence, the joke at the top of this page. We can’t believe you actually scanned the QR code.

Did you notice the typeface on the back of the card? It’s actually based on the font of a VCR. Something else that is obsolete.

So, the “new” side of this card, is actually quite old.

Holiday Card Performance

Finally, this card gives us the ability to track holiday performance. I have installed various analytics to this site, so that we can track usage.

So, we will know that someone in your geography clicked the QR code, and we will see how much our cards travel.

But, in the end, we’re just happy if they sit on the mantle next to all your other cards. We hope you have many, and that you enjoy this one.

Now, please select the holiday message of your choice:
